Conservative leader Stephen Harper is promising members of service organizations like the Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club that their membership fees will be eligible for a tax credit.

The prime minister says that were he re-elected, his government would allow membership costs to be claimed under the Charitable Donations Tax Credit. The additional credit would be worth between 15% and 29% per person, depending on how much someone has donated that year.

The Conservative Party estimates that as many as one million people would be eligible for the extra tax credit.
