Interns more than free labour

Each summer, students and new graduates fight to get career experience as interns. But they don’t get paid much for their efforts.

That’s because many positions offered in North America are unpaid or offer low lump sums. And in many cases, it seems common employment standards go out the window (even though interns work regular hours and require training like other staff).

To complicate matters further, Canada’s provincial and federal legislature is ambiguous when it comes to how much interns should be paid and how to treat their overtime hours.
