While Eric Sprott is best known for his aggressive equity management style and penchant for precious metals, he’s also established a strong reputation for his fondness of Canadiana.

His collection of Inuit art is legendary; teaming up with several western First Nations, he created the massive One Earth Farms; and the Carleton business school bears his name.

Now he’s adding another title: Race car sponsor.

Sprott and his eponymous asset management company have sponsored 24-year old Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe, getting him a seat with the prestigious Newman/Haas Racing.

“As a Canadian-based company it’s naturally exciting to support one of Canada’s next generation motorsport talents,” Sprott said in a press release on the Newman/Haas website. “James (Hinchcliffe) has an excellent pedigree and we’re confident that his record of success will continue in the IndyCar Series. Everyone at Sprott Inc. shares the competitive spirit and drive of both Newman/Haas Racing and James.”

Hinchcliffe will start his Indy career this weekend in the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

“Having the support from a prominent Canadian company as I start this next step in my career is extra special,” Hinchcliffe said. “I can’t thank Eric Sprott and Sprott Inc. enough for their commitment and I’m sure we can do Canadian sport proud!”
