Surging gold stocks helped the S&P/TSX composite index come back from a triple digit slide to close up 94.36 points at 11,223.12. The U.S. non-farm payrolls report for January said the American economy shed another 20,000 jobs. But the jobless rate moved down three-tenths of a point to 9.7%. Canadian data showed the addition of 43,000 new jobs in January, pushing the unemployment rate down by one-tenth of a point to 8.3%. The Canadian dollar was up 0.24 of a cent to 93.46 cents, while the price of oil dropped $1.95 to US$71.19 a barrel. New York’s Dow Jones industrials gained 10.05 points to 10,012.23, the Nasdaq composite index was 15.69 points higher at 2,141.12 and the S&P 500 index advanced 3.08 points to 1,066.19.
