The S&P/TSX composite index closed 68.19 points lower at 11,517.54 after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced at the conclusion of its meeting on interest rates that it was keeping its benchmark rate at a record low of near zero. Almost seven months into a strong rally, investors were hoping that the Fed would provide an economic outlook strong enough to justify carrying on with the strong gains of 2009. On Wednesday, the Fed said that “economic activity has picked up following its severe downturn” but added that rates will stay at current levels for an “extended period of time.” The TSX energy sector shed 1.35% with the price of oil in New York down $2.79 to US$68.97 after data showed an unexpected rise in crude inventories in the U.S. last week. The Canadian dollar moved down 0.53 of a cent to 93.01 cents US. New York markets were also weak as the Dow Jones industrial average fell 80.79 points to 9,749.08. The Nasdaq composite index was down 14.88 points to 2,131.42 while the S&P 500 index lost 10.79 points to 1,060.87.
