The S&P/TSX composite index drifted 21.34 points lower to 11,424.61 after the main index ran ahead 193 points or 1.7% last week. A stronger U.S. currency pushed the Canadian dollar down 0.67 of a cent to 92.81 cents US. TSX losses were led by the telecom and gold sectors, while the energy sector was slightly higher even as the October crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange declined $2.33 to US$69.71 a barrel. New York markets were mainly lower as the Dow Jones industrials lost 41.34 points to 9,778.86 after the U.S. Conference’s Board’s forecast of economic activity rose in August for the fifth straight month. The Nasdaq composite index gained 5.18 points to 2,138.04 as Dell said it will buy technology services company Perot Systems for about US$3.9 billion. The S&P 500 index lost 3.64 points to 1,064.66.
