The Toronto stock market snapped a four-session losing streak to surge more than 250 points, with buyers encouraged as the U.S. economy started growing again in the third quarter.

The S&P/TSX composite index ran up 269.89 points or 2.5 to 11,075.22. The U.S. Commerce Department reported that U.S. gross domestic product rose at a 3.5 annualized pace. That was slightly better than the 3.3 growth that economists had expected and was the first time the economy has grown since early 2008.

However, growth was fuelled by government-supported spending on cars and homes – and that raises some questions in the market about the sustainability of the GDP increase.

The Canadian dollar was up one cent to 93.72 cents US as the GDP announcement raised hopes that an expanding U.S. economy will translate into higher demand for commodities. Oil rose $2.41 to US$79.87 a barrel.

New York indexes also charged ahead with the Dow Jones industrial average up 199.89 points to 9,962.58.

The Nasdaq composite index climbed 37.94 points to 2,097.55 while the S&P 500 index was up 23.48 points at 1,066.11.
