The S&P/TSX composite index finished up 91.35 points at 11,533.37. Sentiment improved after Wal-Mart said it expects sales to increase one to two per cent for the current fiscal year and four to six per cent for next year. Investors also drew encouragement from PNC Financial Services Group Inc. and Fifth Third Bancorp. Both U.S. banks said bad loans are not mounting as fast as they had been and that pushed financial stocks higher. The Canadian dollar was down 0.16 of a cent to 95.44 cents US amid a warning from the Bank of Canada that it expects that the continuing strong dollar will undercut exports and hamper economic growth. Oil prices backed away slightly from Wednesday’s close above US$81 a barrel, the highest level in a year, closing down 18 cents at US$81.19 a barrel. New York markets turned higher as investors also liked the tone of the latest batch of earnings reports. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 131.95 points to 10,081.31, the Nasdaq composite index was ahead 14.56 points to 2,165.29 and the S&P 500 was ahead 11.48 points to 1,092.88.
