The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 52.39 points at 11,600.3 as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development increased its forecast for economic growth in 2010 in its 30 member countries, but cautioned that any recovery will be slow because of high unemployment. Financials moved down after Manulife Financial said it is raising $2.5 billion to restore its balance sheet. The company will issue about 132 million shares at $19 each. Its shares fell $1.23 or 6.1% to $18.95. The tech sector was down after Bank of America Merrill Lynch downgraded eight microchip companies, including Intel and Texas Instruments, because of worries that inventories are too high. The Canadian dollar gave back 0.8 cents to 94.03 cents US, while oil fell $2.12 to US$77.46 a barrel. Gold ticked 70 cents higher to a record close of US$1,141.90 an ounce. New York’s Dow Jones industrial average was down 93.87 points to 10,332.44, the Nasdaq composite index declined 36.32 points to 2,156.82 and the S&P 500 index fell 14.9 points to 1,094.9.
