P.M. market numbers: November 18, 2009

The Toronto stock market closed slightly higher amid solid earnings from the retail sector but a decline in gold stocks and a downgrade of Research In Motion Ltd.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed at fresh 2009 highs, up 22.69 points to 11,652.69. The Canadian dollar closed down 0.31 of a cent to 94.83 cents US.

The consumer staples sector was the strongest component, with shares in grocer Metro Inc. up 80 cents or two per cent at $36.90 as the company reported rising profits and increased its dividend by 10% to 14 cents per share.

Gold climbed $1.80 to a record close of US$1,141.20 an ounce while oil closed up 44 cents at US$79.58 a barrel.

RIM shares fell $1.28 or two per cent to $63.25 after a BMO Capital Markets analyst downgraded the stock to market perform from outperform on worries about increased competition as consumers opt for less expensive smartphones.

New York indexes were lower as the October reading on housing starts missed expectations. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 11.11 points at 10,426.31, the Nasdaq composite index lost 10.64 points to 2,193.14 and the S&P 500 index was 0.52 of a point lower at 1,109.8.
