The Toronto stock market has closed at its highest level for 2009 amid higher energy stocks and a solid earnings report from grocery chain Loblaw Companies Ltd.

The S&P/TSX composite index moved ahead 117.74 points to 11,630, about 44 points higher than the previous closing high reached in mid-September.

The Canadian dollar moved down 0.36 of a cent to 95.14 cents US. Oil gained 24 cents to US$79.14 a barrel while gold inched up 20 cents to another record close of US$1,139.40 an ounce.

Loblaw shares moved up almost 5% as the grocery giant reported quarterly net income of $189 million, up 20 per cent from a year ago.

New York indexes closed slightly higher despite disappointing reports about retailers and manufacturing. The Dow Jones industrials closed 30.46 points higher at 10,437.42, the Nasdaq composite index was up 5.93 points to 2,203.78 while the S&P 500 index was ahead 1.01 points to 1,110.31.

Home Depot Inc. shares fell 2.4 per cent as quarterly earnings and sales fell but beat analysts’ expectations. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve said production at U.S. factories, mines and utilities rose 0.1 per cent in October, less than the expected 0.4 per cent rise.
