Chinese moves to rein in strong economic growth and disappointing earnings from aluminum giant Alcoa Inc. pushed the Toronto stock market lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index tumbled 126.95 points to 11,820.18. The Canadian dollar was down 0.54 of a cent to 96.22 cents US, and oil fell $1.73 to US$80.79 a barrel.

Alcoa earnings came in at one cent a share – five cents lower than expectations.

China’s central bank increased its lending rate and raised the ratio of reserves that Chinese banks must hold.

Alcoa’s earnings raised worries about the pace of the economic recovery, while the Chinese action put pressure on commodities prices because of demand concerns.

New York’s Dow Jones industrial average fell 36.73 points to 10,627.26, the Nasdaq composite index was down 30.1 points to 2,282.31 and the S&P 500 index was off 10.76 points to 1,136.22.
