The Toronto stock market has closed above 11,000 points for the first time in 10 months.

The S&P/TSX composite index soared 230.95 points to 11,018.10 today, surpassing the 11,000 mark in the final moments of trading for the first time since October 1, 2008.

The Toronto index was playing catch-up with New York markets, which rose sharply higher yesterday while the TSX was closed for the long weekend.

Today, the Dow Jones industrial average added 33.63 points to 9,320.19 while the Nasdaq composite index rose 2.70 to 2,011.31.

The price of oil edged down 16 cents to US$71.42, while the loonie added 0.26 cent to 93.07 cents US.

The higher stock markets come amid growing investor optimism that an economic recovery is under way, driving demand for a wide range of products.
