The S&P/TSX composite index added 44.01 points to 10,977.97, leaving the TSX up 146.79 points or 1.35 per cent on the week following solid earnings reports from most of the big banks. But the financial sector fell even as Scotiabank beat earnings expectations in reporting quarterly profit fell to $931 million from a year-earlier $1.01 billion amid rising revenues. The financial sector has seen a strong week following better than expected earnings from Bank of Montreal, TD Bank, Royal Bank, and National Bank. But investors were tempted to take profits after the group gained almost four per cent this week. The price of oil in New York gained 25 cents to US$72.74 a barrel. The Canadian dollar was down 0.53 of a cent to 91.58 cents US New York markets were mixed as consumer spending data met expectations and investors took in positive earnings from computer maker Dell and an improved outlook from chip giant Intel Corp. The Dow Jones industrial average declined 36.43 points to 9,544.2. The Nasdaq composite index gained 1.04 points to 2,028.77 and the S&P 500 index declined 2.05 points to 1,028.93.
