The S&P/TSX composite index closed 8.36 points lower to 10,912.17 as CIBC reported quarterly net earnings of $434 million, up sharply from profits of $71 million a year ago. But provisions for bad loans totalled $547 million, up sharply from $203 million a year ago and its shares fell $3.64 or 5.3% to $65.01. The energy sector was flat as the price of oil in New York dropped 62 cents to US$71.43 a barrel after U.S. crude inventories rose 200,000 barrels last week, a sign of slipping demand. The Canadian dollar continued to lose ground in the wake the Bank of Canada’s warning that it is prepared to intervene to ensure the currency doesn’t derail an economic recovery. The currency closed down 1.01 cents to 91.09 cents U.S. U.S. markets were listless despite data showing that new U.S. home sales surged 9.6% in July. The Dow Jones industrial average added 4.23 points to 9,543.52 while the Nasdaq composite index inched up a fifth of a point to 2,024.43 and the S&P 500 index added 0.13 of a point to 1,028.12.
