The winning streak on the Toronto stock market extended to a fourth session Thursday, as buyers picked up industrial stocks and the energy sector benefited from another rise in oil prices.

The S&P/TSX composite index moved 88.96 points higher to 10,304.42.

The industrials sector ran ahead 1.4% ahead of earnings coming out Friday from General Electric. Despite the gain Thursday, the sector is little changed for the year to date.

The main Toronto index had already surged 468 points or 4.8% this week as solid earnings reports from Goldman Sachs Group and chip giant Intel Corp. encouraged hopes that an economic recovery should in place later in the year.

The good earnings news continued Thursday as U.S. bank JPMorgan Chase also topped expectations, reporting earnings of US$2.72 billion. Its shares moved down 14 cents to US$36.12.

The JPMorgan Chase news Thursday morning was tempered by a report that negotiations between small and midsize U.S. business lender CIT Group Inc. and regulators about a possible rescue broke off after days of talks, raising expectations that the firm will file for bankruptcy protection.

The Canadian dollar took a break after three days of advances that sent the currency up 3.88 cents US so far this week. The loonie moved down 0.23 of a cent to 89.51 cents US.

New York markets also ran ahead for a fourth session despite the CIT worries with the Dow Jones industrial average ahead 95.61 points to 8,711.82.

The Nasdaq composite index gained 22.13 points to 1,885.03 while the S&P 500 index added 8.06 points to 940.74.

The August crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange gained 48 cents to US$62.02 a barrel.

The August bullion contract moved down $4 to US$935.40 an ounce.
