(September 10, 2004) Barbara Stymiest is leaving her position as head of the Toronto Stock Exchange. Royal Bank of Canada announced Thursday night that Stymiest would become the bank’s chief operating officer, effective November 1.

Stymiest will be responsible for strategic development and will have all corporate functions reporting to her, including risk management and finance, the bank said in a statement.

“I am delighted Barbara Stymiest is joining our team at RBC,” said RBC president Gordon Nixon. “Ms. Stymiest has an impressive track record, and I am confident she will make a significant contribution towards helping us meet our business objectives and in generating strong financial performance.”

Stymiest joined the TSX five years ago, presiding over the exchange’s shift to a publicly-traded company and was widely credited for the TSX’s recent success. “She’s leaving the TSX in top notch shape,” said one industry observer.

The TSX board says it has set up a committee to find a replacement for Stymiest. “That search will begin immediately,” the TSX said.

“We wish Barbara every success in the next stage of her career and thank her for her leadership and contributions to the organization,” added TSX chair Wayne Fox. “Barbara leaves behind a strong management team that will continue to execute on the organization’s growth strategy as it has in the past.”
