Ned Goodman dies at 85

Ned Goodman, founder and former CEO of Dundee Corp. and DundeeWealth Inc., passed away on Sunday at the age of 85.

Goodman established Dundee Corp., a mining investment company, in 1991, and DundeeWealth, a financial services subsidiary, in 1998. DundeeWealth, which combined investment management and financial advisory services, was fully acquired by Scotiabank in 2011.

Prior to Dundee, Goodman co-founded Beutel Goodman & Co. Ltd., a privately owned Canadian investment management firm, in 1967.

In 2016, he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions to the investment industry and for his philanthropy efforts in the areas of higher education, culture and health care.

In 2017, Goodman was inducted into the Investment Industry Association of Canada’s Hall of Fame.

Goodman, a former chancellor of Brock University, was a strong supporter of the school’s business faculty, which was renamed the Goodman School of Business in 2012 in recognition of donations from the Goodman Family Foundation.

“Dr. Goodman’s legacy lives on through the students who attend the business school bearing his name and through the graduates who were moved by his words to create change in the world,” Lynn Wells, Brock University’s interim president, told the Brock News. “His generosity and drive to succeed will continue to be an inspiration to generations of Brock University students. He has touched so many lives and will be greatly missed.”

Goodman earned degrees from McGill University and the University of Toronto, and achieved his CFA in 1967 from the University of Virginia. He also received an honorary doctorate of laws from Concordia University in 1997.

His funeral was held today.

Goodman is survived by his wife, four sons, 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
