The Distinguished New Advisor award recognizes the next generation of new advisors and their contributions to excellence in their industry sectors, a release said. Recipients must have demonstrated achievement in managing family wealth, referrability, leadership and innovation, among other areas. New advisors are not just young advisors, said Knowledge Bureau president Evelyn Jacks at the conference. “We had lots of older people or second-career people who are new advisors in the field, and they were doing some amazing things.” Buss is a 35-year veteran of the industry — he launched his career in 1987 with London Life — and is now president of YourStyle Financial Inc. in Winnipeg. He established the firm in 2005 after he left Rice Financial Group Inc., where he had been mentored by Tom Rice. (The move followed Jovian Capital Corp.’s acquisition of Rice Financial.) “Tom taught me to be a true independent broker,” Buss said at the conference, describing his movement up the ranks with Rice from sales to management to executive vice-president. Buss also attributed his success to asking clients plenty of questions to find out what’s important to them, as well as to building relationships with other professionals. “I have requested introductions to my clients’ accountants and lawyers to discuss planning opportunities,” Buss said in the release. “When we meet, we share ideas to come up with the combined solutions required. I find I then get referrals to their clients, too.” Learning with Knowledge Bureau had also “taken my career to the next level,” he said. Next year’s Distinguished Advisor Conference will take place Nov. 11–14 at the Banff Springs Hotel. Advisor’s Edge was a media sponsor of the 2022 Distinguished Advisor Conference.
