Investment industry vet Paul K. Bates dies

Paul K. Bates, a former investment industry leader, commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) and dean of the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., died on Sept. 4. He was 72.

Bates served as head of Charles Schwab Canada before its acquisition by the Bank of Nova Scotia in 2002. Prior to that role, Bates had been president and chief operating officer of TD Greenline Canada, president and COO of Marathon Brokerage and vice-president of wealth management and advisory services with Royal Trust.

Investment Executive named him Canada’s most influential broker in 2000.

From 2003 to 2009, Bates served as part-time commissioner to the OSC. He also chaired the OSC’s Investor Education Fund and the OSC Investor Advisory Panel.

Bates served on the boards of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Canadian Investment Dealers Association.

Bates was dean of the DeGroote School of Business from 2004 to 2010, after which he was special advisor to the president at McMaster University for two years. From 2013 to 2019, Bates served as assistant professor of leadership at McMaster Divinity College.

Among his many credentials and licenses, Bates was a chartered professional accountant, a certified management accountant and fellow of the society of management accountants, and a certified management consultant.

Bates is survived by his wife, three daughters and three grandchildren.
