Each week, Advisor.ca summarizes notable moves across the financial industry.

  • Departing Scotiabank executive Jake Lawrence will join Power Corp. of Canada as its chief financial officer. Lawrence has been with Scotiabank since 2022, most recently responsible for the bank’s wholesale banking and capital markets business, as group head of global banking and markets. He makes the move to Power Corp. as of March 18 and will replace Gregory Tretiak, who took a medical leave of absence last year. At Scotiabank, Paul Scurfield has been appointed as global head of capital markets, global banking and markets, while Michael Kruse has been named interim global head of corporate and investment banking, global banking and markets.
  • Neal Weston has moved from Scotiabank to Sun Life Financial Inc., where he’s been appointed as an AVP and chief compliance officer (CCO) for Canada in the wealth division, pending registration. He noted in an online post that he’ll work on Sun Life’s wealth strategy, including the implementation of its “new dealer platform supporting clients across Canada.” In December, Sun Life confirmed in an email to Investment Executive that plans to expand its wealth distribution platform include the development of Sun Life Canada Securities Inc. The new investment dealer will be “separate from our current mutual fund dealer, Sun Life Financial Investments Services Inc., to allow for select advisors to transition to our new securities platform,” the company said, adding that it will “look for ways to bring our two dealers closer together in the future.” Weston also was a CCO within Scotiabank.
  • Patrice Cayer, former vice-president and regional manager for Alberta and the Okanagan with National Bank Financial in wealth management has been promoted to senior vice-president and national manager for Western Canada. The shifts means “enhanced support” for advisor teams in that region, the bank said in an email, with Cayer rounding out the national management team that also includes Simon Lemay, senior vice-president and national manager for Quebec and Atlantic; and Jennifer Plenert, senior vice-president and national manager for Ontario.
  • Darryl Brown is head of Eastern Canada and associate client relationship manager with Vancouver-based Genus Capital Management Inc. Brown said in his announcement that his move was sparked by his “passion for sustainability,” while the firm said his joining has opened up a new regional market. The firm serves corporate and institutional investors, foundations, family offices and individual accredited investors.
  • Ahmad Bakhshai has joined Wellington-Altus’ Advanced Wealth Planning Group as an associate vice-president, coming from BMO Nesbitt Burns where he was an advisor. He also is a professor with the Queen’s University Smith School of Business.
