Johnston Lifetime Achievement Award in Financial Planning, FP Canada said in a release on Wednesday. The award is named after the certification body’s first president and CEO, and recognizes significant contribution to financial planning in this country. “It is difficult to overstate the impact Cary’s vision and leadership have had on FP Canada and the evolution of the financial planning profession in Canada,” said Martin Dupras, chair of FP Canada’s board, in the release. “The recognition that FP Canada receives today as the premier standards-setting body for professional financial planners and the recognition of the profession by lawmakers, regulators and society has much to do with Cary’s foresight and passion for financial planning,” Dupras added. List retired as FP Canada’s president and CEO earlier this year after 15 years in the position. Two of his earliest achievements were the establishment of the first Financial Planning Practice Standards in Canada, and the development and publication of a competency profile for financial planners, which formed the basis of the global competency profile for certified financial planners (CFPs). His tenure also included the transition to the rebranded FP Canada in 2019, comprising the FP Canada Standards Council and FP Canada Institute, and the recent overhaul of the CFP certification and education program. His numerous achievements also include volunteer work to improve financial literacy. Only 10 individuals, a group that includes List, have won the lifetime achievement award since its 2006 inception. “Financial planning is a key determinant in the confidence and financial wellbeing of Canadians, and I’m humbled that FP Canada feels I’ve played a personal role in furthering professional financial planning in Canada,” List said in the release.
