Canadian to chair international Financial Planning Standards Board

(January 23, 2003) Canada’s John Carpenter will chair the new international body responsible for overseeing the certified financial planner program. Carpenter, executive director of the Certified General Accountants Association of Alberta, was given the post at the inaugural board of directors meeting of the Financial Planning Standards Board earlier this month in Denver.

“I am honoured to have been chosen to lead the Financial Planning Standards Board and to take CFP certification to its next stage of evolution internationally,” Carpenter said. “FPSB will work to establish the CFP marks as a ‘must-see’ for global consumers seeking competent and ethical financial planners.”

Carpenter, based in Calgary, is a past chair of Canada’s Financial Planners Standards Council and served as a Canadian delegate to the International CFP Council for two years.

“John has been instrumental to the success of the CFP certification program in Canada and will be a tremendous asset to the international board,” said FPSC president Don Johnston.

Johnston will serve as chair of the FPSB’s advisory board, the FPSB Council, starting in 2004.

The FPSB, which took over CFP certification from the American CFP Board at the beginning of 2003, represents 72,000 financial planners in 19 countries. There are currently more than 14,000 planners licensed to use the CFP designation in Canada.
