(March 20, 2003) After consulting with the financial services industry, the Canadian Securities Institute has decided to scrap the assignment portion of its popular Canadian Securities Course. Students still have to write two exams to complete the course.

“After analysis and consultation with the industry, it was determined that the online component’s multi-dimensional learning surpassed the benefits derived from the assignment,” the CSI said in an e-mail sent to CSC students on Monday. “Therefore completion of the assignment is no longer necessary.”

Students who have already passed the exams, but have not requested the assignment, will automatically receive their CSC certificate. Others will be transferred to the non-assignment version of the course.

The two-volume CSC is an introductory investment course, popular with newcomers to the financial services industry as well as consumers interested in upgrading their investment knowledge. Successful completion allows students to apply for licensing as a mutual fund salesperson. The CSC is also the first step toward obtaining a securities licence.
