(January 31, 2008) Canadians appear to have reined in their spending over the holidays, according to a survey by credit management firm TransUnion.

In a survey of 1,000 adults, the company found 36% had spent less using their credit cards than they had in 2006. One-third said they racked up about the same amount of credit card debt over the holidays.

While a large number assumed less debt, paying it down also seemed to slip from top of mind. Only 17% of respondents said paying down credit cards is their top priority for 2008, compared to 22% last year.

“It’s always wise to stay on top of your finances and particularly so with the current potential for financial troubles in the U.S. to ripple across the globe,” says Tom Reid, director, consumer solutions, at TransUnion.ca.
