As part of its strategic expansion in Canada, Barclays has appointed Ian Montgomery as COO of the Canadian operations and John Kennedy as chief compliance officer of Canada.

Montgomery will be based in New York. He will be responsible for coordinating front office activities in Canada.

Kennedy will be based in Toronto. He will be responsible for coordinating compliance matters related to the firm’s Canadian business.

Redwood merges with Ark Funds

Redwood Asset Management and Ark Financial Holdings have announced that they have merged.

The merge of the two businesses will not result in changes to the firms’ funds or sub-advisors, which include Aston Hill Financial, Lawrence Decter Investment Counsel, SciVest Capital Management, NorthRoad Capital Management and Sentry Select Capital.

“Investors in our funds won’t see any changes on their portfolio statements. We will promote three distinct brands within our fund family. The Redwood funds, a performance-oriented fund family; core offerings through the Ark Funds and Market-Neutral through the SciVest family of Funds,” explains Peter Shippen, president of Redwood Asset Management Inc. and founder of Ark Fund Management Ltd.

Desjardins wins communications awards

Desjardins Financial Security won 12 awards in the 2009 Insurance & Financial Communicators Association (IFCA) awards.

The company received awards of excellence in several categories including: Consumer Publication Advertising, Internet Advertisements and Prospects/Customer Promotion — Print.

In other news, its parent company, Desjardins Group, has created an internet chat sessions for students to speak with youth clientele representatives.

The chat sessions are separated into two parts. The first, Let’s talk money! will provide tips and tricks on how to avoid having to tighten your belt.

Students survival guide is the second session. It will focus on bursaries, savings and financing option.

The sessions are scheduled for Sept. 16 and 23 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
