The awards, which have an English and French component, were handed out today at IFIC’s annual conference in Toronto. Gage’s article “Time is Expiring” appeared in the July 2003 edition of the magazine. “I feel very honoured to receive an award from the industry that I serve,” says Gage of her award-winning story dealing with the challenge of getting baby-boomers’ retirement plans back on track following a period of poor performance. On the English side, the grand prize winner was Gordon Pape, for his article, “Ask Hard Questions,” which ran in Mutual Funds Update. Second place went to Morningstar Canada Investment Funds Editor Rudy Luukko for a two-part series published in the Toronto Star on a widow’s battle with the mutual fund industry. The judges were selected from colleges and universities across Canada as well as from nationwide financial organizations. IFIC president and chief executive officer Tom Hockin says the program is designed to recognize and encourage journalistic efforts to educate the investing public in the field of investment funds. “The media are an excellent source of information and provide an effective medium through which the investing public can receive information,” Hockin adds.
