What happened on the NYSE floor when JFK died

Today marks 50 years since U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while on tour in Dallas, Texas.

When the news hit Wall Street that the president had been shot, Bloomberg’s Mike Robbins—a 31-year-old-floor trader at the time—recalls a “palpable change” of mood at the New York Stock Exchange. Traders rushed to sell their largest stocks.

The exchange closed when the president died. “A pall descended on the place as people realized what had happened,” says Robbins.
