Wealthy Americans stacking up

The ranks of the well-off in the United States have increased in size and financial resources, finds the 2013 Ipsos Affluent USA.

Ipsos estimates there are 62.5 million American adults living in households that make $100,000 a year or more. That’s up more than 6% over the past two years. Compared to 2012, these peoples’ average income rose 4.6% to $200,200, and their net worth rose 2.0% to $1.01 million.

The survey also uncovered some of the spending and consumer patterns of this well-off group:

  • 81% read at least one print magazine or newspaper
  • 63% own a smartphone
  • 41% own a tablet
  • 99%+ use the Internet, spending an average of 41.6 hours online a week, with those aged 18-31 spending an average of 52.7 hours a week online
