With the debt ceiling standoff and the government shutdown settled for now, President Barack Obama is starting to work with Republicans and Democrats to find a long-term solution to U.S. finances, reports the Washington Post.

“Now that the government is reopened, and this threat to our economy is removed, all of us need to stop focusing on the lobbyists and the bloggers and the talking heads on radio and the professional activists who profit from conflict, and focus on what the majority of Americans sent us here to do, and that’s grow this economy,” Obama says.

As part of the agreement that ended the standoff, politicians will start a committee to work on a compromise for the 2014 budget. The Post says Republicans and Democrats started meeting this week.

This week’s agreement raises the debt ceiling enough to pay government bills until February, and funds the government until Jan. 15.
