Quebec’s maple syrup industry in sticky standoff

A group of Quebec maple syrup farmers say they’ll take their fight to deregulate syrup production and sale to the Supreme Court if necessary, reports the Globe and Mail.

Last week the Quebec Superior Court ruled the province can continue to control how the product is sold outside its borders.

But some producers want the right to sell their products as they see fit—and want to end what they see as cartel-like control of the industry.

There are currently 7,500 provincial syrup producers, who produce syrup according to quotes from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers. Any extra goes into a strategic reserve. The Federation says this system guarantees a good price for the product. Any producer who disobeys could be raided.
