Is the U.S. more socialist than Canada?

Lately, Canadians have enjoyed more economic freedom then our neighbours to the south, reports the Manhattan Institute.

Since 2005, Canada has outstripped America on economic freedoms, and the margin is widening, finds a study co-published by the Cato Institute, the Fraser Institute and more than 70 other think-tanks worldwide.

The study defines economic freedom as “the extent to which you can pursue economic activity without interference from government, as long as your actions don’t violate the identical rights of others.”

The most recent ranking of countries by economic freedom came out in September. It looks at 2011 trends.

Canada is ranked the sixth-freest economy in the world, up from seventh in 2000. The U.S. is ranked 19th, down from second in 2000.
