That figure is from Ice Hockey In Canada, 2015 Impact Study: The Economic, Social, Community and Sport Benefits of Canada’s Favourite Game, written by a Canadian researcher at Ohio University. Professor Norm O’Reilly examined the impact players, coaches, clubs, leagues, tourism organizations, governments and corporate sponsors had on the wider economy. About half of the estimated $11 billion comes from tourism, while NHL games and other major events generates 31% of the income. Professional players who cash their paycheques in Canada account for 10%, reports Sportsnet. More than $1 billion goes into Canadian towns with less than 100,000 people. Read more here.
