Feds cut budget for jobs data research

The federal government has cut funding for employment data research by more than 20%, reports the Globe and Mail.

“Debate over the quality of Canada’s jobs data has heated up in recent months as the Conservative government launches a new Canada Job Grant training program, reforms employment insurance and will soon announce major changes to the temporary foreign worker program,” the article explains.

The revelation comes amid complaints by many economists that Canada’s labour market data was already sub-par compared with statistics compiled by other nations. It’s troubling news given the need for investors to see tangible evidence Canada’s economy has broken free of the lingering grip of the 2008-2009 recession.
