Here’s some sample wording you can use in a client email aimed at starting the discussion about snowbirding. You’ll want to personalize the phrasing to fit the precise circumstances, but we have suggested some starting points.

IMPORTANT – What you need to know about becoming a snowbird

Hi [client’s first name],

[Advisor’s first name] here. Hope this message finds you well.

I wanted to follow up on something we spoke about back in [date in the past]. We were discussing your retirement, and you mentioned that you [and spouse’s first name if applicable] were thinking seriously about becoming snowbirds and spending your winters down south.

Great idea. Over the years, a lot of my clients have done the same thing, and they’ve never been happier.

That said, there are some financial considerations you should think on before joining the flock, particularly if you’re considering buying property in the U.S.

That’s why I’m putting on a seminar for a select group of clients on [date]. These clients are roughly the same age as you, and are either existing snowbirds or thinking about migrating south each winter. I want to educate attendees about the ins-and-outs of owning property in the U.S. and give everyone a clearer picture of the pros and cons.

We’ll answer questions like:

• Should I rent or own?

• How can I find a mortgage for U.S. property?

• Should I hold U.S. property in a trust or a partnership?

• What are the tax implications of renting out the property in the off season?

• What does owning U.S. property mean for my estate plan?

[first name], based on discussions we’ve had, I know you want to make the right decision when it comes to your retirement. That’s exactly what this seminar will address. If you’re thinking about purchasing a condo or a home in the U.S., you need to know how that might affect your finances.

I’m not inviting all of my clients to this event — just those who would benefit most. Still, seating is limited; so if you’re interested, please give [assistant’s first name] a call at [number] as soon as possible.

Best regards,
